Short history
The first coin ever to be minted in Sweden is said to be struck about AD 995 under the rule of Olof Skötkonung. All coins where minted in Sigtuna, and the coins where designed with the English coins as model. This was due to the Viking heritage as the Vikings from Swedan, Norway and Denmark had extensive contacts with England for two centuries. All Swedish pennies from this period are rare. During a period that extended for 500 years the only coins to be minted in Sweden where small pennies, all in silver and all in weights that ranged from 1/10th of a gram up to about 1 gram.

The large reform in the area of coinage occurred under the king Gustav Vasa 1521-1560. The increasing trade with Europe demanded larger coins and the first trade coinage, the Daler, was minted in 1534.

The third phase in Swedish monetary history occurs during the reign of "The lion from the north", Gustav II Adolf. In 1624 the first value based copper coin was struck. During the reign of queen Kristina an extensive coinage in copper started. The unique plate money, the largest with a weight of 19.7 kg, was minted in 1644, was only the beginning of 150 years of plate money mintage.

The Swedish monetary system was complex, with parallel mint systems, one in copper, one in silver, and on top of that trade coinage in silver and gold. All three systems with exchange rates constantly changing.

In 1873, to take a large step in the history of monetary reforms, the last large reform took place. Sweden abandoned silver based coinage in favor for the gold based, and a monetary union with Denmark and Norway started.
